San Francisco Beer Week 2011

beer week in SF is a big deal. tons of special events are held throughout the week, and a lot of great breweries/brewers from around the country show up. there are even some special beers brewed specifically for SFBW each year. Angela and i went last year and had an absolute blast, so we decided to pack up the rental car, drive the short 7hrs, and do it again!

our trusty rental, which we got very attached to

Friday night: first stop, Frjtz. this is a belgian fries inspired bar/cafe in the heart of SF. the food here is EXCELLENT, i highly recommend this place (i believe there are two locations downtown). i got the mussels, while Angela got the burger, and we shared an order of the fries. everything was amazing, and very reasonably priced.

hey...check out my huge mussels

Angela's burger, yum!

after dinner, we headed over to Toronado for their Firestone, Ninkasi, Lagunitas night.

yikes! huge crowd

after a bit of a wait, i finally settled down with a Lagunitas Fusion Hop High (brewed just for beer week), and a Ninkasi Vanilla Oatis Stout. both were excellent. (reviews coming soon!)

the long awaited brews. oh and my beer book, yes...i'm a nerd.

on our way back to the hotel, we stopped off at The Bistro in Hayward, Ca for a very special treat. one of the most talked about and elusive beers on planet earth......Pliny the Younger. PTY is the stuff of legend at this point, and the demand for it grows greater and greater every year.
in 2010, Vinnie and the guys at Russian River sold out of 600 GALLONS of Pliny in less than 8 hrs. this year was no exception. when it was released on Feb 4th this year, people waited in line for hours just to get a taste of PTY. some never getting to the bar to order one before they ran out for the day.

(here is a Brewtal Yeti Beer Tip: if you ever make it to SF for beer week, stop by the Bistro, just outside of the city on the Friday night before their annual Double IPA festival. they have PTY on tap and you can just stroll in and order it like you're ordering a Heineken. i've done this two years in a row now, no crowds, no hassle, no being turned away. just great beer in a stress free environment, the way it should be. but shhh, don't tell anybody.)
